CWG 2026: Bindyarani Devi Bags Bronze in Women’s 58kg Weightlifting

Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam added another medal to India's growing tally at the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026, clinching the bronze medal in the women's 58kg weightlifting event with a combined lift of 199kg (87kg Snatch + 112kg Clean & Jerk).

The 27-year-old lifter from Manipur delivered a composed performance to secure India's fifth weightlifting medal and sixth overall medal at the Games. The achievement also marked Bindyarani's second consecutive Commonwealth Games podium finish, having won silver in the 55kg category at the Birmingham 2022 Games.

Strong Start in Snatch

Bindyarani opened her campaign with a successful 83kg lift before confidently clearing 85kg and 87kg in the snatch segment. Her 87kg effort left her tied with England's Eliza Pratt, setting up a thrilling contest for the bronze medal heading into the Clean & Jerk.

Nerve-Wracking Clean & Jerk

The clean & jerk phase began dramatically as Bindyarani's opening 110kg lift was overturned following a jury review due to an elbow wobble. Showing remarkable composure, she returned to successfully lift 110kg on her second attempt before raising the bar to 112kg on her final successful lift.

She attempted 116kg in search of silver but could not complete the lift. Nevertheless, her 199kg total was enough to edge past Pratt, who finished with 196kg, ensuring the Indian lifter claimed the bronze medal.

Lawal Sets Games Record

Nigeria's Rafiatu Folashade Lawal dominated the competition, successfully defending her Commonwealth title with a Games record total of 229kg, while the silver medal went to another outstanding performer after a strong overall display.

Bindyarani's bronze continues India's impressive run in weightlifting at Glasgow 2026 and reinforces the country's reputation as one of the sport's strongest nations at the Commonwealth Games.
