CWG 2026: Sarvesh Kushare Scripts History with India's First High Jump Silver

Indian high jumper Sarvesh Anil Kushare created history by winning the silver medal in the Men's High Jump at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming the first Indian to secure a silver medal in the event.

Kushare cleared 2.25 metres on his third attempt, matching Jamaica's Romaine Beckford, who also cleared the same height. However, Beckford claimed the gold medal on countback after clearing 2.25m on his first attempt. Both athletes failed to clear 2.28m, leaving the Jamaican ahead on attempts.

The achievement marks another milestone for Indian athletics. While Tejaswin Shankar won India's first Commonwealth Games medal in the men's high jump with bronze at Birmingham 2022, Kushare has now elevated the country's standing by securing its first-ever silver in the discipline.

The 24-year-old's inspiring journey began in Devargaon village in Nashik, Maharashtra, where he is the son of an onion farmer. With limited facilities, Kushare trained using makeshift landing pits filled with agricultural waste and corn husks before rising through the ranks of Indian athletics.

His Glasgow success follows an outstanding season. Earlier this year, Kushare set a new national record of 2.31m at the Inter-State Athletics Championships and became the first Indian high jumper to win a medal at the Monaco Diamond League, earning bronze.

The silver medal further strengthens India's athletics campaign at the Commonwealth Games and highlights Sarvesh Kushare's emergence as one of the country's brightest field event stars.
