The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games came to a memorable conclusion as the Duke of Edinburgh delivered the official closing address, celebrating the spirit of unity, friendship and excellence that defined the multi-sport event.

In his speech, the Duke praised the athletes, officials, volunteers, organisers and supporters for bringing the values of the Commonwealth to life through their passion, sportsmanship and dedication.

"Every four years, we endeavour to come together to celebrate our Commonwealth through sport," he said, thanking everyone who contributed to the success of the Games and acknowledging Glasgow's outstanding role as host.

Highlighting the power of sport to unite diverse nations and territories, the Duke noted that the Games had inspired millions while demonstrating the shared values of the Commonwealth.

Following long-standing Commonwealth tradition, he formally invited athletes from across the Commonwealth to gather again in Ahmedabad, India, in four years' time for the 24th Commonwealth Games. The 2030 edition will hold special significance as it marks the centenary of the Commonwealth Games, celebrating 100 years since the inaugural event.

Concluding the ceremony, the Duke declared:
"Until then, on behalf of His Majesty The King, our patron, and in the name of Commonwealth Sport, I proclaim Glasgow 2026 closed."

With the ceremonial handover complete, attention now turns to Ahmedabad, which will host a landmark centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030, ushering in the next chapter of one of the world's most celebrated multi-sport events.
