Salah Inspires Egypt Into World Cup Round of 16
Egypt reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in their history after defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in Dallas.
After registering their maiden World Cup victory against New Zealand in the previous round, the Pharaohs continued their dream campaign by overcoming the Socceroos in a dramatic knockout clash.
Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead in the 13th minute, heading home after his initial effort was blocked. Australia responded in the second half when Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned Aiden O'Neill's free-kick into his own net, forcing the match into extra time.
Both teams had chances to win before penalties. Patrick Beach produced an outstanding save to deny Rami Rabia's powerful header, while Harry Souttar made a crucial block to keep Australia alive.
The shootout belonged to Egypt, who converted all four of their penalties. Mohamed Salah confidently scored with a Panenka, while Australia missed twice through Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington, allowing Hossam Abdelmaguid to seal a historic victory.
