The evening’s late kick-off could not be decided inside 90 minutes as despite a hatful of chances for both sides and even a disallowed goal for England captain Harry Kane, neither Middlesbrough nor Tottenham could find a goal.
The first 15 minutes of extra time were similarly tense and action-packed but without the crucial finishing touch. It was only when teenage substitute Coburn beat the offside trap and lashed powerfully past Hugo Lloris in the 107th minute that the tension dissipated on Teeside.
