Steve Cooper’s in-form Championship side were seeking a repeat of their 2018 victory over the Gunners at the same stage and took the game to their visitors from the outset.
Four years ago managerless Forest beat the Gunners 4-2 in the third round as Arsene Wenger’s reign meandered towards its disappointing conclusion.
The pressure grew after the break and Philip Zinckernegal saw a volley well saved by Bernd Leno from Brennan Johnson’s cross.
And the lively Johnson was the provider for the winning goal, providing a fine cross which was converted by substitute Lewis Grabban to set up an East Midlands derby with holders Leicester City in the next round.
It is just the second time the Gunners have fallen at the third round stage since 1996 and both exits have been at the hands of Forest.
After the match Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta said , “We needed more drive, more hunger to win at any cost in every single action. We were not there at our level today.”
Nottingham Forest coach Steve Cooper said,”We’re here to compete, we’re here to play well and win games. We scored a goal which was the outstanding move of the game.”
