Florida jet crash kills nine; federal investigators examine cause
A Florida jet crash killed all nine people aboard a privately operated Learjet 60 in Palm Beach County on Sunday, November 1, officials said. The aircraft had left Austin, Texas, for the Bahamas before coming down near a residential area.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the fatalities and said the crash occurred at 12.50 pm. Authorities reported no immediate deaths or injuries among people on the ground.
Residents evacuated as agencies investigate
The impact left a large crater beside a road near a mobile home community. Palm Beach County commissioner Joel Flores said about 600 people were being evacuated to two shelters as emergency teams dealt with the aftermath.
Authorities also closed the affected roadway until further notice. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis addressed reporters near the scene in Lake Worth Beach, describing the force of the aircraft's impact.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the Florida jet crash. Officials had not established the cause, and the identities of those who died had not been released.
Air traffic control recordings described in the reports indicate that the crew encountered ice and turbulence before the descent. The aircraft had been flying east at 35,000 feet, and the crew requested permission to climb by another 2,000 feet.
The situation then worsened rapidly, with emergency calls reporting an accelerating loss of altitude. The recordings also referred to an overspeed condition before the aircraft banked and struck the ground.
The available reports give differing figures for the highest descent rate. Those accounts do not establish why the aircraft lost control.
Heavy rain was affecting the region, and the National Weather Service had issued a flood watch extending through Monday afternoon. Weather conditions and the crew's reported difficulties form part of the available account, but investigators had not announced a cause.
