U.S. President Donald Trump has highlighted the dramatic events aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 after an alleged cockpit attack left Indian Captain Smit Machchhar injured and sent the Boeing 737 MAX 8 into a rapid descent while flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30.

According to accounts reported after the incident, the aircraft plunged by roughly 14,000 feet in less than a minute during the cockpit struggle. The flight was carrying 174 passengers and was ultimately diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.
Indian Captain Opens Cockpit Door
Captain Smit Machchhar was reportedly attacked by his co-pilot, who Israeli officials have identified as an Omani national. Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door before losing consciousness.
That allowed passengers to enter the flight deck and intervene while the aircraft was in a dangerous descent.

Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayun, a plumber, was among those who entered the cockpit. Hayun said he pulled the co-pilot away from the controls, while he and others helped restrain the attacker. An off-duty pilot travelling aboard the aircraft subsequently assisted in taking control of the plane.
Trump Highlights Passenger’s Intervention
Trump has spoken about the incident following discussions surrounding the flight and the response of those aboard. Reports say he highlighted the actions of Hayun and the crew during the crisis.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also met Hayun after passengers returned to Israel and praised the actions that helped prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome. Netanyahu described the incident as a possible “9/11 disaster” that had been averted.
Investigation Into Cockpit Security
The incident has raised questions about aviation security, particularly the safeguards surrounding cockpit access and crew members.

However, claims that the incident exposed a specific loophole allowing a pilot to carry a knife into the cockpit have not yet been established by investigators. The UAE has ordered a specialist investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident, including whether there was terrorist activity, prior planning or direction.
Israeli officials have described the incident as an attempted terror attack, while the investigation into the co-pilot's motive and the precise sequence of events remains ongoing. The UAE authorities have urged against speculation before the probe is completed.
The incident has placed renewed attention on cockpit security and the challenge of protecting aircraft when the alleged threat comes from someone already authorised to enter the flight deck.
The safe outcome of Flight FZ1073 was made possible through the combined actions of Captain Machchhar, passengers and additional qualified crew members who intervened during the emergency.
