West Bengal school meal allocation is set to increase to ₹10 per child for primary school students as the state government steps up efforts to improve student health, nutrition and overall well-being.

The enhanced allocation is aimed at ensuring that children receive fresh, nutritious and wholesome meals during school hours. Alongside increasing the financial support for school meals, the West Bengal government is also expanding its partnership with ISKCON to strengthen meal preparation and delivery across the state.

West Bengal School Meal Allocation to Support Better Nutrition

The increase in the West Bengal school meal allocation is expected to provide greater resources for improving the quality of food served to primary school students.

A nutritious school meal plays an important role in supporting children's health, concentration and participation in classroom activities. By increasing the allocation to ₹10 per child, the state aims to strengthen the nutritional component of its school meal programme.

The initiative focuses not only on increasing funding but also on ensuring that meals are prepared and delivered with appropriate attention to quality and hygiene.

ISKCON Partnership to Expand Fresh Meal Supply

As part of the initiative, the West Bengal government is expanding its collaboration with ISKCON for supplying fresh and wholesome meals to students.

The programme has already reached more than 2,45,000 students in Kolkata, and the partnership is now being extended to Purulia.

The expansion is intended to bring the benefits of freshly prepared meals to more children while strengthening the overall delivery mechanism of the school nutrition programme.

Focus on Quality and Nutrition

The collaboration places emphasis on providing meals that are fresh, nutritious and suitable for school-going children.

The initiative is designed to complement the increased West Bengal school meal allocation by ensuring that additional resources translate into better food quality and improved nutritional outcomes for students.

Existing School Cooks to Continue

An important feature of the initiative is that it seeks to improve school meals without affecting the livelihoods of existing school cooks.

The programme will continue to protect the employment and income of cooks already working in schools, while introducing additional support through community-based participation.

This approach aims to balance improved food quality with the interests of people who have traditionally been involved in preparing school meals.

Self-Help Groups to Provide Boiled Eggs

Self-Help Groups (SHGs) will also play a significant role in the expanded nutrition programme.

Under the initiative, SHGs will be involved in providing boiled eggs twice a week to students. Eggs are an important source of protein and can contribute to a more balanced diet for growing children.

The involvement of SHGs also creates an opportunity to connect child nutrition with local community empowerment.

Combining Nutrition with Community Empowerment
The programme therefore has two objectives:

improving the nutritional quality of school meals and creating opportunities for local community groups to participate in the initiative.

By involving SHGs, the government aims to ensure that the benefits of the programme extend beyond students and contribute to greater participation at the community level.

Programme Expanding Beyond Kolkata

The school meal initiative has already reached a significant number of students in Kolkata, with more than 2,45,000 children covered under the existing arrangement.

The proposed expansion into Purulia is expected to extend access to fresh meals to students outside the state capital.

The move highlights the government's focus on expanding school nutrition initiatives across different parts of West Bengal.

Strengthening Student Health Through School Meals
School meal programmes can play an important role in supporting children's overall development. Regular access to nutritious food can help students remain attentive during school hours and support their physical growth.

The increased West Bengal school meal allocation, along with the expanded ISKCON partnership and participation of SHGs, is aimed at creating a more comprehensive approach to school nutrition.

The government is seeking to combine better funding, improved meal delivery and additional nutritional support to strengthen the programme.

The increase in the West Bengal school meal allocation to ₹10 per primary school student marks an effort to strengthen nutrition and student welfare across the state. The expansion of the ISKCON partnership, which has already benefited more than 2,45,000 students in Kolkata, will extend to Purulia.

At the same time, protecting existing school cooks and involving Self-Help Groups in providing boiled eggs twice a week is intended to combine improved child nutrition with community participation and livelihood support.
