Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday virtually carried out the Bhumi Pujan for five major expansion projects of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and YIL from Kolkata.

The projects, worth approximately ₹3,500 crore, are aimed at significantly strengthening India’s shipbuilding, ship repair, metallurgical and production capabilities.

The expansion initiatives are expected to provide a major boost to the country’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem while advancing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

The projects also align with the government’s broader ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ vision, with a focus on enhancing domestic industrial capacity and developing globally competitive manufacturing capabilities.

The expansion of GRSE and YIL is expected to further strengthen India’s strategic maritime and defence-industrial capabilities, supporting the country’s long-term goal of becoming a leading global hub for shipbuilding and related manufacturing.
