Gurugram Waterlogging: Rao Inderjit Singh Backs Underground Tunnel Plan

Gurugram waterlogging has remained a persistent problem in the city for several years, and BJP MP Rao Inderjit Singh has called for a long-term solution by restoring the traditional drainage routes through underground tunnels.

Speaking about the recurring waterlogging problem in Gurugram, Rao Inderjit Singh said the city's rapid development over the years has affected the natural drainage system. According to him, several traditional drains that once carried rainwater from the surrounding hills towards the Yamuna have been obstructed or built over as urbanisation expanded.

Gurugram Waterlogging Linked to Natural Drainage Disruption

Rao Inderjit Singh said the existing waterlogging problem cannot be addressed effectively through temporary measures alone. He pointed out that the old drainage channels played an important role in carrying excess water away from Gurugram.

According to the BJP MP, construction and development over these traditional drainage routes have disrupted the natural flow of rainwater. As a result, heavy rainfall can quickly lead to water accumulation in different parts of the city.

He attributed much of the present situation to development carried out during the previous Congress-led period, saying the city is still facing the consequences of decisions taken during that phase.

Underground Tunnels Proposed as Long-Term Solution

Rao Inderjit Singh suggested that underground tunnels could provide a more permanent solution to Gurugram waterlogging. He compared the proposed infrastructure with the underground tunnels constructed for Metro services.

The BJP MP said tunnels could be developed along the routes of the old natural drains. These underground channels could help carry rainwater through the original drainage corridors and reduce pressure on the city's existing drainage infrastructure.

He argued that restoring the traditional flow routes would be more effective than repeatedly attempting to control water at isolated points.

Why Existing Measures Offer Limited Relief

According to Rao Inderjit Singh, several measures currently being implemented provide temporary relief but do not completely resolve the underlying problem.

He described these efforts as a “Band-Aid” solution, suggesting that interventions at one location can sometimes cause water to accumulate at another point.

“When we block the water in one place, it finds a way out elsewhere,” he said, highlighting the need for a comprehensive drainage strategy for Gurugram.

The observation comes amid continued concerns over waterlogging during periods of intense rainfall, when large volumes of water can overwhelm existing drainage arrangements.

Government Working on Funding and Infrastructure
Rao Inderjit Singh said the government is working towards addressing the problem and arrangements are being made for the required funds.
