India MERCOSUR Trade Agreement: Talks Begin to Expand Pact
KT- India MERCOSUR Trade Agreement

India MERCOSUR Trade Agreement negotiations have been formally launched to explore the expansion of the existing Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) between India and the Southern Common Market, known as MERCOSUR. The announcement was made by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Uruguay’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mario Lubetkin.

The two ministers announced the beginning of negotiations with the objective of broadening the existing trade framework and strengthening economic relations between India and MERCOSUR member countries.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the proposed expansion is aimed at covering additional areas of mutual interest while creating greater benefits and opportunities for the private sectors of both sides.

India MERCOSUR Trade Agreement Expansion Talks Begin

The launch of negotiations marks a new phase in the India MERCOSUR Trade Agreement framework. India and MERCOSUR currently have a Preferential Trade Agreement, and both sides are now looking at ways to expand its scope.

Piyush Goyal and Mario Lubetkin agreed that the existing agreement should be broadened to cover areas that are of mutual interest to India and the MERCOSUR bloc.

The proposed expansion is expected to provide a wider framework for economic engagement and potentially create additional opportunities for businesses and private-sector participants.

Ministers Focus on Deeper Economic Relations
The discussions between the two ministers focused on strengthening economic relations between India and MERCOSUR.

The expansion of the existing PTA is intended to support closer commercial engagement and provide greater opportunities for businesses operating in the respective markets.

Both sides have expressed the objective of creating an expanded agreement that can better reflect areas of mutual interest and contribute to stronger economic cooperation.

What Is MERCOSUR?

MERCOSUR, or the Southern Common Market, is a regional economic bloc in South America. India has an existing Preferential Trade Agreement with the bloc, providing a framework for preferential market access between the participating economies.

The ongoing negotiations are focused on expanding this existing arrangement rather than creating an entirely new trade framework.

The proposed expansion could provide a broader basis for India’s economic engagement with the MERCOSUR region, subject to the outcome of negotiations and the final agreement.

Terms of Reference Being Finalised

A key next step in the India MERCOSUR Trade Agreement expansion process is the finalisation of the Terms of Reference.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said India and MERCOSUR are currently in the process of finalising these Terms of Reference.
