India-New Zealand FTA to Take Effect on October 20
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has announced that the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will enter into force on October 20, 2026, coinciding with Vijay Dashami. New Zealand Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay also confirmed the formal ratification of the agreement.
The agreement, signed in April 2026, will provide 100% duty-free access for Indian exports to New Zealand from the date it comes into force. It is expected to create expanded opportunities for Indian businesses, exporters, farmers, MSMEs and professionals.
A key component of the agreement is New Zealand's commitment to facilitate USD 20 billion in investment into India over 15 years.
The FTA also establishes an Agricultural Productivity Partnership, aimed at bringing New Zealand's expertise and technology together with India's agricultural scale and market needs.
The agreement covers wider areas including trade in goods and services, investment, professional and student mobility, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and technology. The two countries have described the pact as an important step towards strengthening their long-term economic partnership.
Truly delighted to announce, along with my friend Mr. Todd McClay, New Zealand's Minister for Trade & Investment, joining virtually, that the India-New Zealand FTA will enter into force on 20th October 2026, on the occasion of Vijay Dashami.
