India’s Brave 0-0 Draw Against Australia Ends Hockey World Cup Semifinal Hopes

Indian women’s hockey team in action against Australia at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team produced a courageous and high-intensity display at Wagener Stadium, holding Australia to a 0-0 draw in their final Pool E encounter at the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium & Netherlands 2026.

The result was not enough for India to secure a place in the semifinals. Australia advanced to the final four from Pool E alongside hosts the Netherlands, while Salima Tete’s Indian side will now compete in the fifth-to-eighth place classification playoffs.

Australia’s Early Goal Ruled Out

Australia started aggressively and appeared to take an early lead when Grace Stewart found the net in the second minute. India immediately referred the decision, and the video review overturned the goal after determining that the ball had been played dangerously high.

India continued to face pressure as Australia created opportunities through penalty corners and attacking moves. Goalkeeper Savita Punia and defender Bichu Devi produced crucial interventions to keep the scores level.

India Unable to Capitalise on Power Play

Australia’s Tatum Stewart received a green card in the 12th minute, giving India a two-minute numerical advantage. However, the Indian team struggled to turn their territorial pressure into clear scoring opportunities as Australia maintained tight defensive marking.

Australia also threatened through sharp attacking efforts from Alice Arnott and Steph Kershaw, but India’s defensive resilience kept the Hockeyroos from breaking the deadlock.

Late Push Falls Short

With India needing a win to reach the semifinals, the team intensified its attack in the closing stages. India pulled Savita Punia from goal to introduce an additional outfield player and applied sustained pressure inside Australia’s 23-metre area.

Despite the late surge, Australia maintained its defensive structure and successfully saw out the final moments to secure the draw.
Following the Netherlands’ 4-1 victory over China, Australia’s qualification was confirmed, with the Hockeyroos joining the Dutch side in the semifinals.

India remain unbeaten in their main-bracket campaign but will now turn their attention to the fifth-to-eighth place classification matches later this week.

The result ends India’s hopes of reaching their first Women’s Hockey World Cup semifinal since 1974, but the team’s determined performances throughout the tournament provide a strong platform for the classification phase.
