India’s victory marks the country’s fifth Asian Games Men’s Hockey gold medal, following triumphs in 1966, 1998, 2014 and 2022. The 2026 title also saw India achieve a historic milestone by successfully defending its Asian Games men’s hockey crown for the first time.
India Dominate Malaysia in Gold Medal Clash
India began the final with authority, controlling possession and earning successive penalty corners. Captain Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a trademark drag-flick.
Malaysia, however, responded against the run of play just three minutes later when Shello Silverius converted a half-volley to level the contest at 1–1 after the opening quarter.
India regained control in the second quarter. In the 23rd minute, drag-flick specialist Jugraj Singh restored India’s advantage with a powerful effort into the bottom-left corner, sending India into halftime with a 2–1 lead.
The third quarter saw India further tighten their grip on the final. Vice-captain Hardik Singh dictated the tempo from midfield and earned a penalty stroke in the 42nd minute, which he calmly converted to extend India’s lead to 3–1.
India then produced a dominant finish in the final quarter. Shilanand Lakra capitalised on a loose ball in the 54th minute to score India’s only field goal of the final.
Three minutes later, Harmanpreet Singh completed the scoring with another penalty-corner conversion in the 57th minute, taking his tournament tally to an impressive 12 goals.
India eventually secured a commanding 5–1 victory and another Asian Games hockey gold medal.
Historic Hockey Golden Double
The triumph completed a memorable Hockey Golden Double for India. Just 24 hours earlier, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team defeated China 1–0 to claim gold.
It is the first time in Asian Games history that both Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams have won gold medals at the same edition.
India have also joined Pakistan as only the second men’s hockey programme in Asian Games history to successfully retain the gold medal.

Manpreet Singh Makes History
Another historic achievement came from veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh, who became the first Indian hockey player to win three Asian Games gold medals, having previously triumphed in 2014 and 2022.
Direct Qualification for Los Angeles 2028
India’s continental triumph also secured a direct qualification place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The Men in Blue will therefore bypass the Olympic Qualification Tournaments and secure direct passage to the 2028 Summer Olympics.
The 5–1 victory over Malaysia therefore goes beyond another Asian Games title. It represents a landmark chapter in Indian hockey, combining a successful title defence, a first-ever men’s and women’s golden double, and direct qualification for Los Angeles 2028.
