Irankunda Inspires Australia to Stunning Victory Over Türkiye

Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe produced moments of brilliance as Australia secured an impressive 2-0 victory over Türkiye in Vancouver to kick off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in style.

The match also marked a dream debut for young goalkeeper Patrick Beach. The 22-year-old was a surprise selection ahead of veteran Mat Ryan, but he justified the decision with a series of outstanding saves against Arda Güler and the Turkish attack.

Beach's influence was felt early when he denied Güler with a sharp stop before quickly launching a counter-attack. Within moments, Australia had transitioned from defence to attack, and Irankunda made the opportunity count, cutting inside before unleashing a sensational right-footed strike into the net.

The debutant goalkeeper continued to shine throughout the contest, brilliantly tipping an Abdulkerim Bardakcı effort onto the post and later parrying away a dangerous free-kick from the ever-threatening Güler.

Despite Türkiye enjoying spells of possession, Australia remained a constant threat on the break. The Socceroos sealed the victory 15 minutes from time when Connor Metcalfe won the ball in midfield, surged forward and fired a superb left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

The result sets up a top-of-the-table Group D clash between Australia and the United States in Seattle, while Türkiye face a crucial encounter against Paraguay as they look to keep their qualification hopes alive.
