David Hat-Trick Sparks Canada World Cup Dream

Jonathan David delivered a historic performance as Canada secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory with a commanding win over nine-man Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver.

The Canadian striker scored a memorable hat-trick to lead the 2026 co-hosts to a dominant triumph that puts them on the verge of reaching the knockout stage. Canada now have four points from two matches and are in a strong position to advance from the group.

Canada made an electric start in front of a passionate home crowd. Cyle Larin opened the scoring after converting a rebound, before David doubled the advantage with a thunderous volley that gave Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada no chance.

Qatar's night quickly unraveled when Homan Ahmed was sent off in the 30th minute for bringing down Tajon Buchanan. David capitalized on the numerical advantage by adding his second goal just before halftime.

The visitors were reduced to nine men in the second half after Assim Madibo received a red card for a challenge on Ismael Koné. Nathan Saliba added another goal from a free-kick before Mohamed Manai scored an own goal. David then completed his hat-trick late in the match to cap a remarkable evening.

The achievement also placed David in the history books, becoming the first player to score a World Cup hat-trick on home soil since England's Geoff Hurst in 1966.
Named Player of the Match, David was the standout performer as Canada celebrated a landmark World Cup victory.

After the match, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch praised both his players and the supporters.

"We wanted to play the kind of football that would electrify the crowd. We wanted to showcase the talent and mentality that we have. There are going to be 40 million Canadians who claim they were in the stadium today. These 55,000 were lucky and what a performance they saw," Marsch said.

The historic result will be remembered as one of the greatest nights in Canadian football history, with the hosts now firmly in contention for a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout rounds.
