Kumartuli Ghat Redevelopment to Transform Kolkata’s Historic Riverfront

Kumartuli Ghat Redevelopment: Adani Group Plans Heritage Makeover
KT- Kumartuli Ghat

Kumartuli Ghat redevelopment is set to give one of Kolkata’s most iconic cultural landmarks a new heritage-modern identity ahead of this year’s Durga Puja. The historic riverside area is being upgraded with modern visitor facilities while efforts are being made to preserve its traditional character.

The redevelopment project, estimated to cost around Rs 10 crore, is being undertaken with the support of the Adani Group. According to administrative sources, the renovated ghat is expected to be formally inaugurated on September 24, subject to the progress of construction work. Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani is expected to attend the inauguration ceremony.

The project is being viewed as an important initiative to improve Kolkata’s riverfront infrastructure while highlighting the city’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.

Kumartuli Ghat to Get Modern Infrastructure
The Kumartuli Ghat redevelopment project covers nearly 300 metres of riverfront between Kumartuli and Chhapatala Ghat. The plan includes several new facilities aimed at improving the experience of residents, tourists and visitors.

Among the major features planned as part of the redevelopment are:

A wide riverside walkway
Additional seating areas
A modern food park
A dedicated boating zone
Improved visitor facilities

A new exhibition centre showcasing traditional artworks

The redevelopment is expected to transform the riverside stretch into a more organised and attractive public space while retaining the distinctive cultural identity of Kumartuli.

Heritage and Modernity to Come Together

Kumartuli is internationally recognised for its traditional clay artistry and its association with the making of idols, particularly Durga idols for Kolkata’s famous Durga Puja celebrations.

The redevelopment plan reportedly places considerable emphasis on preserving the area’s heritage. Old temples, historic structures and traditional houses in the locality are expected to remain protected as beautification work progresses.
The objective is to create a balance between modern infrastructure and Kolkata’s traditional architectural and cultural character.

Rather than replacing the heritage identity of the neighbourhood, the project aims to showcase it in a more visitor-friendly environment.

Exhibition Centre to Highlight Kumartuli Artisans

One of the proposed highlights of the Kumartuli Ghat redevelopment is a modern exhibition centre dedicated to the area’s potters and idol-makers.

The centre is expected to display idols and traditional clay artworks created by local artisans throughout the year. At present, much of Kumartuli’s artistic activity is particularly visible during the months leading up to Durga Puja.

A permanent exhibition space could help bring greater visibility to the work of these artisans throughout the year.

New Opportunities for Local Artisans

The proposed exhibition centre could also create opportunities for local artists to reach new audiences and markets.

By presenting traditional clay sculptures and other artworks in an organised setting, the initiative could strengthen the connection between Kumartuli’s centuries-old artistic traditions and Kolkata’s growing tourism sector.

The project therefore has both a cultural and economic dimension, with the potential to support local artisans while attracting visitors.

MoU Signed for Riverfront Development

According to administrative sources, the blueprint for the project was prepared around a year ago.

Subsequently, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited.

The redevelopment work is currently progressing under the supervision of Sanjay Tharde, an advisor to the company and a retired IAS officer.

The project is expected to become an important addition to Kolkata’s riverfront development efforts, particularly in an area that already holds immense cultural significance.

Kumartuli as a Cultural and Tourism Destination

Kumartuli is more than just a traditional artisan neighbourhood. It has become one of Bengal’s most recognisable cultural destinations because of its association with idol-making and Durga Puja.

Every year, artists and craftsmen work with clay to create idols that are transported to different parts of Kolkata, West Bengal and beyond.

The Kumartuli Ghat redevelopment is expected to further strengthen the area's position on Kolkata’s cultural tourism map.

The proposed walkway, food park, seating areas and boating facilities could encourage visitors to spend more time along the riverfront. The exhibition centre could provide an additional attraction by offering visitors a closer look at the artistic traditions that have made Kumartuli famous.

Focus on Preserving Kumartuli’s Traditional Identity

A key challenge in any redevelopment project involving a historic neighbourhood is maintaining its original character.

According to sources, special attention is being given to this aspect of the project. The redevelopment is being carried out with the intention of preserving historic structures and the distinctive appearance of traditional homes in the locality.

This approach could allow Kumartuli to benefit from modern infrastructure without losing the character that makes the neighbourhood unique.

September Inauguration Expected

If construction progresses according to schedule, the renovated Kumartuli Ghat is expected to be inaugurated on September 24.

The timing is significant as the project is being completed ahead of Durga Puja, when Kumartuli attracts considerable attention from residents, tourists, photographers and devotees.

The expected presence of Gautam Adani at the inauguration would also underline the significance of the project for the Adani Group and Kolkata’s wider urban and cultural development.

A Step Towards an International-Standard Cultural Destination

The Kumartuli Ghat redevelopment is being seen as the first major step towards a broader vision of developing Kumartuli into an international-standard cultural and tourism destination.

The combination of heritage conservation, public infrastructure, artisan promotion and tourism facilities could give the area a new identity while preserving its historical roots.

If successfully implemented, the project could also serve as an example of how Kolkata’s historic neighbourhoods can be modernised without compromising their cultural significance.

With Durga Puja approaching, the revamped riverfront is expected to attract significant public attention. The project could ultimately help make Kumartuli not only a centre of idol-making but also a year-round destination showcasing Bengal’s artistic traditions, riverfront culture and heritage.

The Kumartuli Ghat redevelopment represents a significant attempt to combine Kolkata’s heritage with modern urban infrastructure. With a proposed investment of around Rs 10 crore, the project includes a riverside walkway, seating facilities, food park, boating zone and an exhibition centre dedicated to Kumartuli’s traditional artisans.

As work progresses towards the proposed September 24 inauguration, the redevelopment is expected to add a new dimension to one of Kolkata’s most culturally important neighbourhoods while creating greater opportunities for tourism and local artisans.
