PM Modi Inaugurates ₹3,350 Crore Ladakh Development Projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday virtually inaugurated and dedicated five major Ladakh development projects worth around ₹3,350 crore, covering airport infrastructure, strategic road connectivity, energy, water security and heritage conservation.
The projects include a modern passenger terminal at Leh airport and the 298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road, both expected to significantly improve connectivity in the Union Territory.
New Leh Airport Terminal Inaugurated
The new passenger terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh has been built at a cost of around ₹640–650 crore.
Spread over nearly 23,800 square metres, the terminal is designed to handle up to 35 lakh passengers annually, compared with the airport’s earlier capacity of around 10 lakh passengers.
The terminal also incorporates geothermal heating and solar energy, with the government highlighting the need to balance infrastructure development with Ladakh’s fragile environment.
Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road Boosts Strategic Connectivity
Modi also dedicated the 298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road, built by the Border Roads Organisation.
The route connects Nimmu in Leh with Darcha in Himachal Pradesh through the remote Zanskar Valley and provides an alternative corridor to Ladakh alongside the Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh highways.
The road passes through difficult Himalayan terrain, including the high-altitude Shinkun La region, and is intended to improve both civilian connectivity and logistical support for the armed forces.
Travel Time Cut From 12 Hours to Around 3 Hours
The Prime Minister said the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road has been built at a cost of around ₹2,500 crore and will significantly reduce travel time.
A journey that earlier took around 12 hours can now be completed in roughly three hours, he said, adding that the road would also support local trade and commerce.
Projects Also Cover Power, Water and Heritage
The five Ladakh development projects span more than transport infrastructure.
The government said the overall package includes measures related to hydropower, water availability and heritage conservation. Modi also inaugurated India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park in Leh, aimed at preserving Ladakh’s ancient rock art and archaeological heritage.
The Prime Minister also referred to the Hanu hydroelectric project and associated transmission infrastructure during his address.
‘Another Chapter in Ladakh’s Development’
Addressing the gathering virtually, Modi said:
“Today, another chapter is being added to the progress and development of Ladakh.”
He said the newly inaugurated projects would make travel easier, improve electricity facilities, increase water availability and strengthen conservation of the region’s ancient heritage.
Focus on Sustainable Growth
Modi said the government’s approach was to develop modern infrastructure while protecting Ladakh’s local environment.
He added that the new airport terminal would help strengthen tourism while sustainable technologies such as geothermal heating and solar energy would reduce environmental impact.
Connectivity, Tourism and Security Get a Boost
The latest Ladakh development projects are expected to improve tourism, trade and access to essential services while also strengthening strategic mobility in the Himalayan region.
With the airport terminal, strategic road network, power projects and heritage initiatives now being added to the region’s infrastructure, the government said the projects would support both economic growth and long-term development across Ladakh.
