Magical Musiala inspires FC Bayern win over Wolfsburg

by Kolkata Today

Jamal Musiala rose to the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts as he helped FC Bayern Munich to a routine 2-0 win over Wolfsburg.

FC Bayern have scored 13 goals across their first three competitive games of the 2022/23 season.

Immediately looking to build on their emphatic start to the season last weekend, Benjamin Pavard’s flicked header from Joshua Kimmich’s corner clipped the top of the crossbar and FC Bayern went even closer to opening the scoring when Sadio Mane turned in Serge Gnabry’s cross, but the offside flag cut short the Senegalese’s celebrations.

They were merely delayed by another 10 minutes before Musiala wriggled his way out of the clutches of two Wolfsburg players and kept his composure to place a low shot past Koen Casteels.

Musiala became Bayern’s outright Bundesliga top scorer under the age of 20, beating the previous record of Uli Hoeneß with his 14th.
Musiala has scored in all three competitive games Bayern have played this season, totalling four goals; it is the first time he has scored in three consecutive matches.

Musiala tried to force his way through again, with the ball this time falling out to Kimmich, who stung Casteels’ palms with a rasping drive. Bayern’s next opening stuck as Muller cleverly diverted Kimmich’s low shot past the wrong-footed Casteels.

Müller has now scored in 14 different Bundesliga seasons, equalling the record held by Gerd Muller, Klaus Augenthaler and Mehmet Scholl.
Thomas Muller has scored more goals against Wolfsburg (12) than any other club he’s faced.

Wolfsburg almost scrambled a goal early in the second half with Lukas Nmecha and Omar Marmoush biting at the hands of Manuel Neuer, who was eventually able to gain full control of the ball from Josuha Guilavogui’s cross. Neuer needed a strong right hand to turn Ridle Baku’s curling cross away as Wolfsburg fought valiantly, but risked falling further behind when Casteels had to scamper to turn Leroy Sane’s deflected shot over and the offside flag ruled out a Dayot Upamecano goal. Mane headed one wide before heading his next effort in, but for the third time in the game, VAR was consulted for an offside decision which again went against the Bavarians.

Mane still left the field to a standing ovation, with 17-year-old Mathys Tel taking his place for the final 10 minutes, and another ovation followed as Musiala – the league’s top-scorer after two rounds of matches – went for an early shower, and the 75,000 fans on the Allianz Arena were on their feet again soon after to celebrate a second Bayern win of the season.

FC Bayern have never lost a home match to Wolfsburg (W24, D2; 75 goals scored, 16 conceded).
