Mamata Banerjee Moves Calcutta High Court Challenging Bhawanipur Election Defeat to Suvendu Adhikari
Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee filed a petition at the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday challenging the result of the Bhawanipur Assembly election, where she suffered a shock defeat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in the West Bengal Assembly elections.
Banerjee sought judicial scrutiny of the result, alleging irregularities in the conduct of the election and requested examination of the validity of the outcome.
The legal challenge marks the latest chapter in the intense political rivalry between Banerjee and Adhikari, who has beaten her twice in assembly polls.
Banerjee has sought appropriate relief under the Representation of the People Act as per court filings, requesting judicial intervention.
Adhikari won at Bhawanipur by a margin of more than 15,000 votes in one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Banerjee had filed a separate petition earlier, challenging Adhikari's 2021 Nandigram victory against her, which remains subjudice.
