Mithu Mukherjee dies at 71 after a prolonged battle with cancer. The veteran Bengali actress passed away at a private hospital in Mumbai on Sunday night, September 20, 2026. She had reportedly been undergoing treatment for cancer for nearly a year.

A familiar face of Bengali cinema in the 1970s and 1980s, Mithu Mukherjee was known for her performances in films such as Marjina Abdulla, Nishi Kanya, Mouchak and Swayamsiddha. She also worked in Hindi cinema during her career.

Mithu Mukherjee's Journey in Bengali Cinema

Born in Kolkata in 1955, Mithu Mukherjee entered the film industry at a young age. She began her acting career with Chitta Bose's Shesh Parba and subsequently gained recognition with Dinen Gupta's Marjina Abdulla, where she played the titular character.

Her career during the 1970s saw her appear in several notable Bengali films. Among them, Nishi Kanya, Mouchak, Swayamsiddha and Hotel Snow Fox became important titles in her filmography.

Memorable Films and Collaborations

Mithu Mukherjee worked with several leading actors of her era, including Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Ranjit Mullick. Her performance in Mouchak remains particularly remembered by Bengali cinema audiences.

She also appeared in films such as Kabi, Pratima, Bhagyachakra and Sandhi. Although her film career was relatively short, her work during the 1970s and 1980s established her as a recognised name in Bengali cinema.

Mithu Mukherjee in Hindi Cinema

Mithu Mukherjee also ventured into Hindi films. She made her Hindi film debut with Dulal Guha's Khaan Dost in 1976. She later appeared in films including Safed Jhoot, Dillagi and Do Ladke Dono Kadke.

Despite working in both Bengali and Hindi cinema, she remained particularly associated with Bengali films and the memorable roles she played during the peak of her career.

A Life Away From the Spotlight

After working in films for several years, Mithu Mukherjee gradually stepped away from the industry and maintained a private life away from the public eye. Her final film was Chandra Barot's Ashrita, released in 1990.

She had been living in Mumbai for several years. Reports said that she had been undergoing treatment for cancer for nearly a year before her death.
