OpenAI funding reportedly secures $11 billion at $1.25 trillion valuation
OpenAI funding has reached an initial close of roughly $11 billion at a company valuation of $1.25 trillion, according to people familiar with the transaction. The money had been transferred by Friday, the reports said.
The fundraising is not yet complete. One person familiar with the discussions said the overall round could reach $20 billion, with the remaining portion expected to close over the coming weeks.
OpenAI declined to comment on the reported transaction. The people describing the funding spoke anonymously because the details had not been made public.
Reported fundraising target reduced
The OpenAI funding plans had previously involved seeking at least $30 billion at a valuation of $1.4 trillion. Those ambitions were reduced as publicly traded companies in the artificial intelligence sector experienced a sell-off, according to the reports.
The developer had been discussing the round for more than a month after putting off plans for an initial public offering. Concerns about infrastructure spending have contributed to a change in market sentiment towards the sector.
Coatue Management and T. Rowe Price were among the investors participating in the first close, people familiar with the matter said. Other reported backers include SoftBank, Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz.
A group of investors from the United Arab Emirates also joined, according to the supplied reports. OpenAI has additionally been working with investment banks on raising money from wealthy individuals and retail investors.
SoftBank, Founders Fund and T. Rowe Price declined to comment, while several other named investors did not immediately respond. OpenAI's preceding funding round, completed in March, raised $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation.
