Piyush Goyal: India Can Become World’s Data Centre Hub

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India is ideally positioned to emerge as the world’s leading destination for data centres, highlighting the country’s strong economic growth, expanding manufacturing base and ambitions in artificial intelligence and semiconductors.

Speaking after a roundtable discussion with stakeholders from the data centre industry, Goyal said the meeting focused on ease of doing business and ways to accelerate the growth of data centres across the country.
“Undoubtedly, India is the world's best location to set up data centres,” Goyal said.

The Union Minister also welcomed India’s 7.8% growth in the first quarter, saying the performance demonstrated the resilience and confidence of the Indian economy despite global uncertainty, geopolitical tensions and ongoing conflicts.

Goyal credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decisive leadership for creating confidence among Indians and said the country’s growth ambitions are closely linked to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

$200 Billion Data Centre Opportunity

Highlighting the potential of the sector, Goyal said the industry is gearing up for investments of nothing less than $200 billion in data centres.

He said the government’s discussions with industry stakeholders had already helped resolve several issues involving different departments of the central government and state governments.

According to Goyal, the data centre sector, along with semiconductors, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing, will play an important role in driving India’s economic expansion in the coming years.

He said these sectors could contribute significantly towards the country’s long-term ambition of becoming a $30 trillion economy by 2047.

Goyal described the interaction with industry representatives as “very engaging and very fruitful”, adding that the government returned from the meeting with new ideas on how to strengthen India’s position as a global data centre destination.

“We go back from this meeting educated, with lots of ideas how we can make India the data centre of the world,” he said.
