Rahul Dravid and Saina Nehwal nominated for 2030 CWG committee
The proposed 2030 CWG committee for Ahmedabad has received Sports Ministry nominations for Rahul Dravid and Saina Nehwal as athlete representatives, according to reports on October 30. The panel is being assembled for the Commonwealth Games that the city will host.
A ministry source confirmed the nominations and said Jinal Mehta and Ananya Birla were the recommended private-sector representatives. Mehta chairs Gujarat Titans, while Birla is associated with the consortium owning Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who holds the sports portfolio, is expected to chair the organising body. The proposed membership also includes Indian Olympic Association representation and Lt. Gen. Harpal Singh from the Commonwealth Games Association of India.
Committee structure and funding plans
The 2030 CWG committee is expected to comprise between 12 and 15 members. Alongside its chair, the structure will include a vice-chair, chief executive and representatives of the Games' governing body, Commonwealth Sport.
The organising body will operate as a company without a profit motive. The model was used for Melbourne's 2006 Commonwealth Games and was subsequently recommended by the Comptroller and Auditor General after the Delhi edition in 2010.
Operational spending for Ahmedabad is projected at Rs 3,000–5,000 crore. The Sports Ministry has committed Rs 2,000 crore in grant support, to be released when requested by the Gujarat government.
That estimate excludes capital expenditure on other infrastructure. Public infrastructure costs will be treated separately because those facilities will serve purposes beyond the Games, according to reports.
India plans a programme of 15–17 disciplines, compared with the 10 featured in Glasgow this year. Ahmedabad secured hosting rights in November 2025, and the Games are expected in October 2030.
Dravid coached India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title, while Nehwal won badminton bronze at the London Olympics in 2012.
