Rahul Gandhi on Dalit Rights: Constitution vs BJP-RSS Ideology

Rahul Gandhi on Dalit rights has highlighted what he described as the continuing reality of caste discrimination in India, saying the country is witnessing a battle between two contrasting ideologies.

Addressing the issue, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said one side represents the Constitution of India, which he associated with the ideals of Dr BR Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel. On the other side, he placed what he described as the ideology of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

According to Rahul Gandhi, the political contest taking place in India is fundamentally linked to these two ideological positions.

Rahul Gandhi Highlights Caste Discrimination

Speaking about the condition of Dalits, Rahul Gandhi said communities belonging to Scheduled Castes have faced discrimination, violence and social exclusion for generations.

He said the Constitution made such discrimination illegal, but claimed that caste-based inequalities continue to be visible in different parts of the country.

Rahul Gandhi cited examples involving Dalit children in schools. He alleged that even today, some Dalit students are made to perform cleaning-related tasks such as sweeping floors or cleaning toilets.

He argued that such practices can have a lasting psychological impact on children and can reinforce social divisions from an early age.

According to him, when children see some of their classmates performing such tasks while others are not required to do them, it can create a sense of inequality and discrimination.

Constitution and Equality in India

Rahul Gandhi referred to the Constitution as an important instrument in the fight against caste discrimination and social inequality.

The Constitution of India guarantees equality before the law and prohibits discrimination on several grounds. It also provides safeguards for historically disadvantaged communities.

Rahul Gandhi said the constitutional vision associated with leaders such as Dr BR Ambedkar sought to create an India where citizens would have equal rights and dignity.

He contrasted this constitutional framework with what he described as the ideology of the BJP and RSS, saying the ongoing political struggle in the country is also a contest over competing visions for India.

Claims About Discrimination in Villages

During his remarks, Rahul Gandhi also spoke about alleged discrimination against Dalits in rural communities.

He claimed that in some villages, Dalit families have faced restrictions on accessing common water sources. According to him, some families have therefore been forced to arrange separate sources of water.

Rahul Gandhi presented this as an example of social exclusion that, he said, continues despite constitutional protections against discrimination.

He also referred to alleged discriminatory practices at tea stalls, claiming that separate cups are sometimes used for Dalits and other customers.

According to Rahul Gandhi, reusable glass cups may be provided to some customers while disposable paper or plastic cups are allegedly used for Dalits.

He described such practices as evidence of the continuing impact of caste-based discrimination in everyday life.
