Rekha Gupta Calls Free Rooftop Solar Plan a “Historic Move” for Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a major push for rooftop solar energy, saying households consuming up to 400 units of electricity will be eligible for a 3 kW rooftop solar system at zero upfront cost under the next version of the Delhi Solar Energy Policy.

Speaking about the Cabinet decision, Gupta said the move aims to accelerate the adoption of solar energy in the national capital and support the vision of a

“Developed India” and a “Developed Delhi.”
Under the initiative, the Delhi government will fully install the rooftop solar systems without charging eligible consumers upfront. The government has set a target of providing free rooftop solar installations to 2.30 lakh households by March 2027.

Gupta said the decision was taken after identifying challenges that had slowed the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Delhi and finding solutions to address them.

Importantly, existing electricity subsidies will continue under the new policy. This means eligible households can benefit from their existing electricity subsidy while also reducing their electricity costs through rooftop solar generation.

The initiative is expected to give a significant boost to residential solar adoption in Delhi while helping households save on power bills and contributing to the city's clean-energy transition.
