The 52-year-old announced his decision during the post-match press conference, confirming that his tenure had come to an end after falling short of his ultimate objective.
"It's the end of the cycle. It's important to have a new voice, a new leader. I came with the goal to win the World Cup, and because I did not win, it does not make sense to continue. I take with myself the memories... It was the experience of my life," Martínez said.
Martínez took charge of Portugal in January 2023 and spent three-and-a-half years leading one of international football's most talented squads. During his tenure, Portugal enjoyed strong qualification campaigns and several impressive performances on the international stage.

However, his tactical decisions—particularly the continued reliance on 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo in a central role throughout the World Cup—remained a major point of debate among fans and pundits.
Portugal's narrow defeat to Iberian rivals Spain ultimately brought their World Cup journey to an abrupt end, with Martínez choosing to close the chapter on his time with the national team. The Portuguese Football Federation is now expected to begin the search for a new head coach ahead of the team's next international cycle.
