Rubio Clarifies US Position on Starshield for Ukraine
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the possible use of Starshield by Ukraine remains under discussion, distinguishing the military satellite service from SpaceXβs commercial Starlink network.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has clarified the distinction between Starlink and Starshield amid concerns raised by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over restrictions affecting satellite-linked drone operations, as Russian forces continue attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.
Speaking on the issue, Rubio described Starlink as a commercial product that is regulated and handled on a commercial basis. He contrasted it with Starshield, which he identified as a defence-oriented military product used by the United States military.
Rubio said Starshield was not currently available to Ukraine, adding that discussions were underway regarding how the country might seek to use the system.
βStarlink is a commercial product... And it's regulated and handled as a commercial product. Starshield is a defense product, a military product,β Rubio said.
He further explained that Starshield was used by the US military and that its potential use by Ukraine was still being discussed.
The remarks come amid ongoing concerns about the role of satellite connectivity in Ukraine's military operations, particularly the use of drones and the impact of restrictions on their communications capabilities.
The distinction between Starlink and Starshield highlights the difference between a commercial satellite internet service and a defence-focused system, as discussions continue over Ukraine's access to satellite-based military capabilities.
