Stephen Miller named to replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff
Stephen Miller was named the next White House chief of staff by US President Donald Trump on Friday, November 6. He will replace Susie Wiles following Republican losses in the midterm elections.
Miller has served as deputy chief of staff for policy and as homeland security adviser. Although associated most closely with immigration, his work has extended across the administration's domestic and foreign policy priorities.
Announcing the change on Truth Social, Trump described Miller as a trusted adviser. When reporters asked about replacing Wiles, the President said he wanted a change and that such moves were sometimes necessary.
A long association with Trump's political operation
Stephen Miller joined Trump's presidential campaign in 2016 after working for Jeff Sessions, then a Republican senator from Alabama. During the campaign, he became known for writing speeches and translating Trump's positions into campaign language.
He subsequently worked as an adviser and speechwriter during Trump's first term, from 2017 to 2021. His association with Trump continued after the President lost the 2020 election.
During that period, Miller established America First Legal, a conservative advocacy organisation that challenged policies introduced under the Biden administration. The group recruited lawyers linked to Trump and Republican state attorneys general.
Miller grew up in Santa Monica, California, and later attended Duke University. As a student newspaper columnist, he wrote about politics from a conservative perspective before moving into congressional work.
In the current administration, he has helped shape immigration enforcement and worked on other executive priorities. His appointment moves him from a policy-focused deputy position into the chief of staff's office.
The announcement drew support from figures in Trump's political movement. White House communications director Steven Cheung highlighted Miller's longstanding involvement with the President's team.
