Sudhanshu Trivedi Highlights India’s Sharp Poverty Decline, Economic Growth
BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi on Monday highlighted India’s decline in poverty and progress in technology and defence while arguing that the country had remained resilient despite global economic and geopolitical uncertainty.
Addressing a press conference in Bhubaneswar, Trivedi credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led NDA government for what he described as India’s strengthening economic position.
His broader claims about the government’s performance and opposition from “forces” within and outside India represent his political assessment.
Trivedi Cites World Bank Poverty Data
Trivedi pointed to World Bank figures showing a steep decline in poverty over the past decade.
The World Bank’s updated estimates indicate that the share of Indians living below the international extreme-poverty line fell from around 27.1% in 2011 to 2.6% in 2023.
At the lower-middle-income poverty threshold of $4.20 per person per day in 2021 purchasing-power-parity terms, the poverty rate fell from approximately 57.7% to 16.1% over the same period.
World Bank Reports Major Reduction in Poverty
The World Bank described India as having recorded one of the world’s fastest poverty declines during the period.
Its analysis linked the improvement to factors including stronger consumption growth, employment gains and expansion of social transfers.
The figures use international poverty thresholds adjusted for purchasing power and should not be read simply as equivalent rupee income levels at market exchange rates.
India Remains Among Fastest-Growing Major Economies
Trivedi also said India was emerging as the fastest-growing economy among the world’s major economies despite global turmoil.
The World Bank describes India as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, while noting that the country continues to face challenges including employment informality, regional disparities and unequal access to some public services.
BJP Leader Highlights AI and Defence Production
Trivedi said India was making progress in areas such as artificial intelligence, defence production and emerging technologies.
He argued that India had also strengthened both internal and external security under the Modi government.
These comments formed part of his broader argument that India had improved its strategic and economic position over the past decade.
Trivedi Claims Some Forces Uncomfortable With India’s Rise
The BJP spokesperson further alleged that some forces within India and abroad were uncomfortable with the country’s progress.
He did not identify specific organisations or provide evidence for that assertion in the remarks quoted.
Such statements should therefore be understood as Trivedi’s political interpretation rather than an independently established finding.
Updated World Bank Figures Differ From Earlier Estimates
World Bank poverty estimates for India have changed as newer household-consumption surveys and revised international poverty lines have been incorporated.
A 2025 methodological update had estimated extreme poverty declining from 16.2% in 2011-12 to 2.3% in 2022-23 under a revised consumption methodology.
The more recent 2026 update, incorporating newer data and revised poverty thresholds, produced the figures of around 27.1% to 2.6% cited in recent reporting.
The Sudhanshu Trivedi India poverty reduction remarks therefore combine verified World Bank poverty trends with the BJP leader’s political assessment of the Modi government’s economic, technological and security record.
