Sunil Kumar Claims Greco-Roman Bronze for India at Asian Games 2026
Indian Greco-Roman wrestler Sunil Kumar delivered a dominant performance at the 2026 Asian Games, securing the Bronze Medal in the Men’s 87kg Greco-Roman wrestling category.
Supported by the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) Development group of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil produced a clinical display in his medal bout against the Philippines’ Callum Johnston Roberts.
The Indian wrestler won 9-0 by technical superiority in under two minutes, maintaining complete control throughout the contest and conceding no points.
Sunil Kumar Adds Another Asian Games Medal
Sunil’s bronze medal continues his strong run on the Asian Games stage. After winning bronze at the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games, he became the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to claim medals at two consecutive editions of the Asian Games.
The Men’s 87kg podium was completed by Japan’s Taizo Yoshida, who won gold, and Kyrgyzstan’s Asan Zhanyshov, who took silver. Uzbekistan’s Jalgasbay Berdimuratov shared the bronze medal with Sunil Kumar.
TOPS Development Pathway Bears Fruit
Sunil’s performance also highlights the contribution of India’s TOPS Development pathway, which is designed to support promising athletes and help prepare them for major international competitions.
His commanding technical-superiority victory adds another significant result for Indian wrestling at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and underlines the country’s growing presence in Greco-Roman wrestling.
With his back-to-back Asian Games medals, Sunil Kumar has further strengthened his position among India’s leading Greco-Roman wrestlers on the continental stage.
