Reacting on social media, Adhikari said the scoreline did not fully reflect the character displayed by the Indian players during the contest.
“Watching our boys match stride for stride, battle for every single ball and play with sheer grit and fearlessness against one of the greatest footballing nations in the world filled my heart with immense pride,” he wrote.
Highlighting West Bengal’s deep connection with football, Adhikari said the state has always “lived, breathed and celebrated the beautiful game” and praised the Indian team’s relentless approach.
He added that the players “did not bow down” and instead held their ground and fought throughout the contest.
While acknowledging that the result did not favour India, Adhikari said the team’s performance offered hope for the future.
“Today might not have been our day on the scoresheet, but in your valiant fight, there is unmistakable hope for the future. Defeats are only stepping stones to greater heights,” he said.
Adhikari concluded his message by encouraging the players to remain proud of their performance, telling the Blue Tigers: “Boys, keep your heads held high.”
