Tajinderpal Singh Toor Wins Asian Games Shot Put Silver

India’s ace shot putter and Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) athlete Tajinderpal Singh Toor delivered a determined performance at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, winning the silver medal in the Men’s Shot Put final with a season-best throw of 20.64m.

Competing in challenging wet conditions, the 31-year-old Indian faced strong competition from Iran’s Mohammadreza Tayebise and Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Tolu.

Tayebise seized control of the competition with a historic 20.81m throw, breaking the previous Asian Games record of 20.75m set by Toor at the 2018 Jakarta Games.

Toor initially found himself in third position behind Tayebise and Tolu. However, the experienced Indian responded with characteristic grit on his fifth attempt, producing a season-best 20.64m to move into the silver-medal position.

Tayebise eventually secured the gold medal with his 20.81m Games Record, while Toor held on to silver. Tolu completed the podium for Saudi Arabia.

Men’s Shot Put Final

Iran’s Mohammadreza Tayebise won the gold medal with a 20.81m throw, setting a new Asian Games record. India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor claimed the silver medal with a season-best 20.64m, while Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Tolu secured the bronze medal.

The silver medal also extends Toor’s remarkable podium streak across three consecutive Asian Games editions. He won gold at Jakarta 2018 with a 20.75m Games Record and successfully defended his title at Hangzhou 2023, winning gold with a 20.36m effort.

At Aichi-Nagoya 2026, Toor added silver to his collection with 20.64m, ensuring that he has finished on the podium at every Asian Games he has contested.

Although Toor missed out on a rare hat-trick of Asian Games gold medals, his latest performance further underlines his consistency on the continental stage. The Indian star also holds the national shot put record of 21.77m.

With three Asian Games medals now to his name, Tajinderpal Singh Toor continues to be one of India’s most accomplished field athletes and a major figure in the country’s athletics programme.
