Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerges as the largest party in Tamil Nadu, falls short of majority: What happens next explained

Tamil Nadu Election 2026 Results: TVK Emerges as Largest Party
The Tamil Nadu election 2026 results delivered a major surprise as actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single-largest party in the state. However, the party fell short of the majority mark in the 234-member assembly.

TVK secured 108 seats, just 10 short of the required 118 to form the government. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance won 73 seats, while the National Democratic Alliance managed 53 seats. No other parties secured representation.

With no clear majority, the big question is: what happens next in Tamil Nadu?

What Happens Next After Tamil Nadu Election 2026 Results?

The fractured mandate opens up multiple political possibilities. Here are the key scenarios:

TVK May Seek Support from Smaller Parties

One possible route for TVK is to gather support from smaller parties within the DMK alliance.

  • TVK needs 10 more MLAs to reach majority
  • Indian National Congress has 5 MLAs
  • Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) have 2 MLAs each
  • Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi could provide additional support

If these parties back TVK, Vijay could comfortably form the government.

However, this move may affect the broader national opposition alliance and strain relations with DMK.

DMK Alliance Supporting TVK

Another scenario is the DMK-led alliance extending support to TVK from outside.

This option is politically viable and could strengthen opposition unity at the national level. However, tensions remain:

  • Vijay has openly called DMK his political rival
  • M. K. Stalin’s leadership faced voter rejection
  • There is no official indication of such support yet

Still, analysts believe this remains a strong possibility.

AIADMK’s Role in Government Formation

The role of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam could also be crucial.

However, senior leader C. Ponnaiyan has already ruled out an alliance with TVK. Additionally:

  • TVK has opposed alignment with Bharatiya Janata Party
  • It has termed BJP an “ideological enemy”
  • Any alliance would require AIADMK to distance itself from NDA

These factors make this scenario less likely for now.

Can Vijay Become Chief Minister?

If TVK secures support from any combination of parties, Vijay could become the first non-DMK, non-AIADMK Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu since 1967.

The coming days will be crucial in determining alliances and government formation after the Tamil Nadu election 2026 results.
