Tejasvi Surya Accuses Congress of Undermining Constitutional Institutions at Mangaluru Rally
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Congress and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing them of attempting to weaken public confidence in constitutional institutions.
Speaking at a BJP gathering in Mangaluru, Karnataka, Surya alleged that the Congress was deliberately running campaigns against institutions including the Election Commission and the Supreme Court.
He described the alleged campaign as part of what he called a wider attempt to create instability in the country.
Those remarks were political allegations made by the BJP leader and were not established findings.
Surya Targets Congress Over Election Commission Criticism
During his Tejasvi Surya Mangaluru remarks, the BJP MP said Congress leaders had repeatedly criticised the Election Commission and other institutions.
The comments come amid a wider confrontation between the BJP and opposition parties over electronic voting machines and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The BJP organised its Mangaluru rally as part of its “Prajaprabhutva Ulisi-Arajakate Alisi” — Save Democracy, Eradicate Anarchy — campaign. The party had said the event was intended to counter opposition allegations surrounding EVMs and SIR.
Thousands Join Mangaluru Rally, Surya Says
Surya said thousands of people had gathered in Mangaluru to show solidarity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He argued that political disagreements should be pursued through democratic and constitutional processes rather than through attempts to undermine public institutions.
The BJP leader said India would continue to function under the Constitution and the rule of law.
Irfan Ansari’s Remarks Trigger Political Row
Surya also responded to controversial comments by Jharkhand Health Minister and Congress leader Irfan Ansari.
Ansari had claimed that around 40 lakh young people were angry with the government and were waiting for Rahul Gandhi’s direction. He also warned that India could face a situation worse than recent political upheavals in Bangladesh and Nepal if public grievances were ignored.
Ansari also said Gandhi had so far restrained those protesters and urged the government to address concerns among young people, farmers, minorities and other sections of society.
‘None of Your Threats Will Have Any Value Here’
Responding to those remarks, Surya said:
“None of your threats will have any value here.”
He said the country would be governed according to the Constitution and the rule of law.
The BJP has interpreted Ansari’s comments as encouraging unrest. Congress leaders and Ansari have framed his remarks as a warning about growing public dissatisfaction rather than a call to violence.
BJP Demands Action Against Irfan Ansari
The controversy has intensified nationally, with BJP leaders demanding action against Ansari.
The Jharkhand BJP has called for his removal from the state Cabinet and sought legal action over his remarks, describing them as dangerous and anti-national.
BJP national president Nitin Nabin has also questioned Rahul Gandhi over his silence on the controversy and asked whether he endorsed Ansari’s statements.
Congress-BJP Clash Over Constitutional Institutions
The dispute comes amid an increasingly sharp political confrontation between the BJP and Congress over electoral processes.
Congress and other opposition parties have questioned aspects of electoral-roll revision and the functioning of the Election Commission, while the BJP has rejected those allegations and accused its opponents of attempting to undermine democratic institutions.
Surya’s remarks in Mangaluru therefore added to a wider national debate over the Election Commission, electoral integrity, political protest and the limits of political rhetoric.
Surya Stresses Rule of Law
Concluding his remarks, Surya said political change must take place only through democratic institutions.
He argued that no threat of mass mobilisation could override constitutional procedures and said the BJP would continue to defend what it described as the integrity of India’s institutions.
