Trump Hails FIFA Review in Balogun Red Card Case
U.S. President Donald Trump has shared new details about his conversation with FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the controversial red card shown to American forward Folarin Balogun during the FIFA World Cup.
Speaking about the incident, Trump said his request to FIFA was simply for a review of the referee's decision, insisting that he never believed Balogun had committed a foul worthy of a dismissal.
"All I did was ask for a review because I didn't think it was a foul. And, you know, again, I'm good at this stuff. I didn't think it was a foul. I thought it was two great athletes that crashed into each other and got entangled," Trump said.
Trump praised FIFA's decision to review the incident, describing it as the correct outcome while strongly criticizing the referee's original call.
"I think they made a really brilliant decision. I think the referee's call was horrible and nobody talks about that. They talk about the red card like it's fine, nobody talks about the referee's decision to red card."
The incident involving Balogun sparked widespread debate among football fans and pundits, with many questioning whether the collision warranted a straight red card.
Trump's remarks have once again drawn attention to the controversial officiating decision and the subsequent review process.
The Balogun case remains one of the most discussed refereeing controversies of the tournament, highlighting ongoing conversations about consistency in officiating and the use of review mechanisms in international football.
