Donald Trump Says He Likes Idea of Making Strait of Hormuz US Territory

US President Donald Trump has again backed the idea of declaring the strategically important Strait of Hormuz a territory of the United States, saying Washington has “total control” over the waterway.

Speaking from the Oval Office on Monday, Trump said he liked the idea of formally declaring the strait US territory. He attributed the claimed control to a US blockade and military presence in the region.

Trump's latest comments come amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran and stalled negotiations over the conflict. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global energy route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.

However, Trump's assertion of “total control” is disputed. The strategic waterway is bordered by Iran and Oman, and questions surrounding sovereignty, navigation rights and international maritime law remain central to the dispute. A unilateral US declaration would not by itself transfer sovereignty over the waterway.

The remarks add another potentially significant dimension to the ongoing US-Iran confrontation, with the future of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz carrying major implications for regional security and global energy markets.
