Veteran leader of the Indian National Congress and former Member of Parliament Abu Hasem Khan Chowdhury, popularly known as “Dalu Babu,” passed away on April 8, 2026, at the age of 88 in a private nursing home in Kolkata. A towering political figure from Malda, Chowdhury played a crucial role in shaping the region’s political landscape. He was the younger brother of the late A. B. A. Ghani Khan Chowdhury, one of the most influential Congress leaders in West Bengal. Known affectionately as “Dalu Da,” he served as the Malda District Congress President and remained a committed and grassroots-level leader throughout his political career. His influence extended across the Maldah Dakshin constituency, where he was widely respected for his connection with the people. His passing is being seen as the end of an era in Malda politics, long shaped by the legacy of the Ghani Khan family. Leaders and supporters across party lines have expressed deep condolences, remembering him as a dedicated public servant and a key pillar of Congress in the region.
