Walter Koenig dies at 90; actor played Chekov in Star Trek
Walter Koenig, the American actor who brought navigator Pavel Chekov to the original Star Trek television series, has died aged 90 at his home in North Hollywood, according to his representatives. Reports published on Monday said his daughter and niece were with him.
His representative attributed the death to natural causes. Galactic Productions also announced his death in a statement shared on Instagram.
Koenig entered Star Trek during its second season, playing a Russian member of the USS Enterprise crew. His youthful appearance and hairstyle were intended partly to draw younger viewers to the science-fiction programme.
A career spanning television, films and writing
Walter Koenig appeared in 36 episodes during the 1967–68 and 1968–69 seasons. He later returned to the role in seven films associated with the original cast, including Star Trek: Generations.
He also wrote Chekov’s Enterprise, published in 1980. Away from that franchise, he portrayed Alfred Bester in Babylon 5, adding another science-fiction role to his television career.
Born in Manhattan to parents who had immigrated from Lithuania, Koenig initially pursued pre-med studies at Grinnell College. He subsequently moved to UCLA to study psychology before developing his interest in acting.
In 1958, he joined New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse, training alongside James Caan, Christopher Lloyd and Dabney Coleman. His television beginnings included Day in Court and appearances in General Hospital in 1963.
George Takei paid tribute to his former colleague, remembering his writing, teaching and friendship. With Koenig’s death, Takei and William Shatner are the remaining surviving principal cast members of the original series, according to the reports.
His later projects included Diminuendo, Unbelievable!!!!! and Raging Midlife. His agent also recalled the time he devoted to conventions and conversations with fans.
