West Bengal Govt Suspends Two MVI Officials Over Alleged ₹22,000 Bribe Demand at Rampur Checkpost

Reaffirming its "zero tolerance" policy against corruption, the West Bengal government has suspended two Motor Vehicles Inspectors (MVIs) over allegations of demanding a bribe from a truck driver at the Rampur checkpost in Paschim Bardhaman district.

According to the government, the truck was allegedly stopped despite carrying all valid documents. The driver accused the officials of demanding ₹22,000 to allow the vehicle to continue its journey.

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the state government placed the two accused MVIs—Nazimul Haque and Anupam Bandyopadhyay—under suspension pending the outcome of an investigation.

The case has also been referred to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for a criminal probe and appropriate legal action against those found responsible.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed officials to immediately release vehicles allegedly detained without valid reasons and ensure that transport operators are not subjected to harassment at checkposts.

Issuing a stern warning, the Chief Minister said no government official involved in corruption, bribery or abuse of power would be spared, irrespective of rank or position. He reiterated that the government's priority is to establish a transparent, accountable and corruption-free administrative system through strict enforcement and prompt disciplinary action.
