West Bengal Announces Free Bus Travel for Women from June 1, 2026; Smart Card System to Be Introduced

In a significant step towards strengthening women’s mobility and empowerment, the Government of West Bengal has announced free bus travel for all women on state-run buses starting from June 1, 2026.

Under the initiative, women passengers will be provided smart cards integrated with QR code technology for seamless travel access.

The smart cards will be issued based on identity documents such as Aadhaar or EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card).
Until the smart card distribution process is completed, women will be able to avail the free travel benefit by showing any valid government-issued photo identification document.

The initiative is aimed at improving accessibility to public transport, reducing commuting expenses, and enhancing women’s empowerment by making daily travel more affordable and convenient across the state.

The move is expected to benefit millions of women commuters, including students, professionals, workers, and senior citizens, while further strengthening inclusive transportation policies.
