Brazilian wingers Rodrygo and Vinícius Jr struck in the opening half-hour as Real Madrid maintained their 100% start. Oleksandr Zubkov’s improvised volley at the end of the first half got Shakhtar right back in it, and the Pitmen enjoyed some bright moments in the second period. The holders stood firm, though, to move five points clear in Group F.

Rodrygo has been named Player of the Match. UEFA’s Technical Observer Panel said: “Scored a goal, provided the pass to Vinícius Júnior for the second goal and created chances for Benzema and others to score. Also good in defence.”
Real Madrid have found the net in 41 of their last 42 home matches in the Champions League group stage.
Shakhtar coach Igor Jovicevic said, “This is experience for us. We suffered in their transitions because they’re the best at that. And in the early stages you could see my players a little nervous – which meant we failed in some simple passes and that’s fatal against Madrid.”
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said,”I’m satisfied. We played pretty well. Our rival performed. I guess we needed more accuracy in front of goal but the key thing always is to create lots of goal chances and we did that.”
