Karim Benzema received the Ballon d’Or 2022 on Monday evening, after winning the election ahead of Sadio Mané and Kevin De Bruyne. The Real Madrid striker is the fifth French player in history to win the prestigious trophy.

Twenty-four years after the coronation of Zinédine Zidane, Karim Benzema became this Monday evening the fifth French player in history to win the Ballon d’Or. The captain of Real Madrid is ahead in the standings for this 2022 edition of Sadio Mane (Liverpool then Bayern Munich), winner of the African Cup of Nations with Senegal, and the Belgian Kevin De Bruyne, champion of England for the fifth time with Manchester City.

Winner of the Champions League for the fifth time in his career, the former Lyonnais also won his fourth Spanish league title. The 2021-2022 season will also have been that of his first trophy with the France team: a League of Nations conquered against Spain (2-1) in the final during which the international with 97 caps equalized a splendid goal. In just over a month, Karim Benzema will set out to conquer the World Cup, the only trophy he is now missing from his extraordinary collection.

Karim Benzema has scored 15 Champions League goals in 2021-22. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (17 in 2013-2014 and 16 in 2015-2016) exceeded this total.
