Federico Chiesa’s goal ten seconds into the second half earned the Bianconeri a hard-fought win. The holders dominated for large swathes in Turin but struggled to fashion chances and always looked susceptible on the break. The electric Chiesa duly struck after the restart, and Federico Bernardeschi squandered a golden chance to add to the scoring on a frustrating night for Chelsea.
Federico Chiesa scored Juventus’ fastest Champions League goal at the beginning of the second half (10 seconds).
Federico Chiesa became the first Italian to score in four consecutive UEFA Champions League starts for Juventus since Alessandro Del Piero in November 1997.
Leonardo Bonucci collected his 450th appearance with Juventus, in all competitions.
Juventus’s Federico Chiesa has been named Player of the Match. “It was an excellent winning goal but, more importantly, he demonstrated great understanding on how to use his position on the pitch to hurt Chelsea on the counterattack and get his Juve team high up the pitch,” said UEFA Technical Observer Roberto Martínez. “He brought pace and dribbling quality, giving his team attacking oxygen and menace.”
Key stat: Juventus have won 12 of their last 13 group stage matches.
Massimiliano Allegri, Juventus coach: “Juventus must win games like this. To win these matches you have to suffer and want to achieve a result. Tonight the lads did it and, with respect to the European champions, Szczęsny didn’t really have any great saves to make. ”
Tuchel on his team lacking intensity: “We struggled to create our own rhythm because they were so deep and so passive. We struggled to find our own intensity, but this is what you need to do.”
