Mamata Banerjee Slams Narendra Modi Over Remarks on Jadavpur University, Defends Student Protests

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks concerning students of Jadavpur University, triggering a sharp political and academic debate.

Expressing anguish, Banerjee questioned the tone and intent behind the Prime Minister’s comments, asking whether such characterisations reflect the decorum expected from the country’s leadership. She highlighted that Jadavpur University has consistently secured top rankings under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), calling it a “centre of excellence” that should not be undermined.

Defending the student community, Banerjee emphasised that those enrolled at the university have earned their place through merit and intellectual capability. She stated that questioning authority and engaging in protest are integral to education and should not be labelled as disorder.

In a pointed critique, she drew a distinction between dissent and what she described as “anarchy,” arguing that student protests represent “democracy in motion.” Her remarks extended to broader governance concerns, including issues of accountability, social justice, and the ongoing situation in Manipur.

Mamata Banerjee also invoked the legacy of Sri Aurobindo, noting that institutions like Jadavpur University are rooted in a long tradition of intellectual and nationalist thought. She urged that such institutions, as well as the identity of Bengal, should not be defamed in political discourse.

The exchange has intensified the national conversation around academic freedom, student activism, and the role of dissent within India’s democratic framework, especially in the context of an increasingly charged political environment.
