A Champion, A Leader, A Legend: Kane Williamson Retires
Kane Williamson, one of the finest batters of modern cricket and New Zealand's highest-ever international run-scorer, has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable 16-year career.
The 35-year-old leaves the international stage after scoring more than 19,000 runs across all formats, including 9,515 runs in Tests, 7,256 in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 2,575 in T20 Internationals. Williamson also registered 48 international centuries and established himself as one of the most respected figures in world cricket.
Announcing his retirement on Friday, Williamson said the decision felt like the right time after giving everything to the Black Caps.
"It does feel the right time. I've given everything to this team, and it has given me a lot more in return," Williamson said.
Widely regarded as New Zealand's greatest-ever batter, Williamson made an immediate impact on the international stage by scoring a century on his Test debut against India in Ahmedabad in 2010.
His leadership reached its pinnacle in 2021 when he captained New Zealand to victory in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship, defeating India in the final at Southampton.
He also guided the Black Caps to the finals of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
One of the defining moments of his career came during the 2019 Cricket World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament after leading New Zealand to the final against England. Despite the heartbreaking defeat on boundary count after a tied match and Super Over, Williamson's performances earned worldwide admiration.
Williamson's retirement also marks the first departure among cricket's famed "Fab Four" batting quartet, which includes Virat Kohli, Joe Root and Steve Smith.
Following the announcement, former India captain Virat Kohli paid tribute to his long-time rival and friend on social media.
"From an opponent to a friend, it's been a privilege to share this era with you. Your humility, class and sportsmanship made you one of the most respected cricketers of our generation," Kohli wrote.
Kohli further praised Williamson's influence on the game, saying he inspired millions not only through his batting achievements but also through his conduct both on and off the field.
As Williamson steps away from international cricket, he leaves behind a legacy defined by consistency, leadership, humility and excellence, cementing his place among the greatest cricketers of his generation.
