Switzerland made an energetic start and threatened through Breel Embolo, but Argentina struck first from a Lionel Messi corner. Alexis Mac Allister rose above a packed Swiss defence to power home a header and hand the South American champions the lead.

Emiliano Martinez then produced a crucial save to deny Embolo in a one-on-one situation, preserving Argentina's advantage before halftime.
After the break, Nahuel Molina squandered a golden opportunity to double the lead before Switzerland responded strongly. Dan Ndoye levelled the match after earlier efforts had been denied by Lisandro Martinez and Emiliano Martinez.
The turning point came in the 72nd minute when Embolo received his second yellow card for simulation, reducing Switzerland to ten men. Messi came close to winning it in normal time with a trademark curling effort that drifted narrowly wide.
Argentina eventually broke the deadlock early in extra time when Julian Alvarez produced a stunning curling finish beyond Gregor Kobel. Lautaro Martinez then sealed the victory with a clinical late strike to send the Albiceleste into the last four.
