The final delivered a thrilling contest between two of the world’s leading hockey nations. Argentina and the Netherlands were locked at 1–1 after regulation time, with Argentine captain Majo Granatto scoring the crucial equaliser.
With the championship unable to be decided in regulation, the final went to a penalty shootout. Argentina held their nerve to win 3–1, with goalkeeper Cristina Cosentino emerging as the hero for Las Leonas with a superb shootout performance.
The triumph gives Argentina their third Women’s Hockey World Cup title and their first global crown since 2010.
The victory also ended the Netherlands’ bid for a fourth consecutive Women’s Hockey World Cup title, bringing an end to the dominant home side’s remarkable run at the global tournament.
FIH President Congratulates Argentina
Following Argentina’s historic triumph, FIH President Tayyab Ikram congratulated Las Leonas on becoming world champions for the third time.
“Congratulations to Argentina on being crowned women’s world champions for the third time! Such an achievement can only result from hard work, mental strength and talent.”
Ikram also praised the Netherlands and Belgium for their performances, congratulating them on securing the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
