Ashwini Vaishnaw Announces 118 Electronics Manufacturing Units Across India
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a significant boost to India's electronics manufacturing sector, stating that a total of 118 electronics component manufacturing units are now being set up across the country following the latest approvals. He described the development as an important milestone in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', adding that several units will be capable of meeting India's domestic requirements while also supporting exports.
Highlighting India's decade-long transformation in electronics manufacturing, Vaishnaw said the industry has progressed from assembling finished mobile phones to manufacturing modules, individual components, raw materials and machinery within the country. Responding to the opposition's earlier criticism of mobile manufacturing as 'screwdriver technology', he emphasised that India is now building a comprehensive domestic electronics ecosystem.
The Union Minister noted that the electronics industry currently provides approximately 25 lakh jobs and is emerging as a major source of employment. He highlighted domestic production of critical components, including anode and cathode materials, copper foils, printed circuit boards (PCBs), optical transceivers, relays and capacitors. These developments are helping India reduce import dependence, particularly for strategic battery components, strengthen supply chains and establish a sustainable manufacturing ecosystem that can benefit future generations.
